Vol 2.

The way the Man with the Ladder stories got written was this. Once a week, usually on Thursday we would go to Chinatown and get supper. One week was for our favorite restaurant; every other week was for wandering around to look for a new restaurant to try. As we would wander we would come with ideas for stories which we would discuss on napkins over dinner. Then we would head home to my loft in Soho and try to commit the story to paper. These conversations were wild; ideas would bounce and scatter. Jim kept track of them in a book we called the Magic Book.

If you asked either of us which is our favorite story of this collection I think we could agree it was the Lumberyard. Certain stories come up again and again when we talk. They are prototypes for some object that exists in the black hole that is our collective imagination:The Lumberyard is one of them. And I think Picasso Paint (which took a long time to be born) is right under it. After that I think both of us would put Derrick for a Day. Jim would probably follow that up with the Karass. I would suggest The Writers, The God Story, The Ant.
I love the Crackerjacks and the Purchase. Beyond that you are on your own.
